Bromsgrove Rovers gained another precious point against high flying Sutton Coldfield Town at Coles Lane. Young Australian striker Fabian Iacovelli opened his Rovers account scoring just after the hour mark. Craig Marshall scored The Royals equaliser from the penalty spot a few minutes later.
Sutton's Ed Booth almost scored in the first minute but his header at the far post was pushed away by goalkeeper Karl Lewis. The Royals continued to push forward with Marshall heading just wide after 12 minutes. A minute later Craig Milligan fired over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
On 20 minutes Stuart Hall's 25yard effort cleared the Royal's crossbar. Three minutes later Sutton's Phil Male almost turned Robert Agar's free-kick past his own goalkeeper Steve Jackson. Iacovelli's effort flashed wide of Jackson's left hand post a minute later as Rovers responded.
Booth had another header superbly turned over the crossbar by Lewis in the 29th minute. On 31 minutes Ed Ryan's effort from the edge of the area was straight at Jackson after good work by Iacovelli. Milligan's long throw in the 39th minute caused confusion in the Bromsgrove area with Chris Godwin and Sam Wills going for the same ball, Matt Dodd seized onto the loose ball but shot weakly straight at Lewis. Just before the break The Royal's created several chances Sam Wilson 40 minutes, Milligan 43 minutes and Richard Ball 44 minutes, all failed to hit the target from good positions.
Agar's 52nd minute through ball for Luke Benbow, set the striker away on goal, as he twisted and turned to forge a chance Male brought him down on the edge of the area, for which he was promptly booked.
On 54 minutes Ball found Marshall on the left hand side of the area, he tried to lift the ball over Lewis, but he just managed to get finger tips to turn the effort onto the crossbar, Nathaniel Caines completed the clearance after a scramble in the box. Five minutes later Lewis was quickly off his line to save bravely at Ball's feet.
Bromsgrove broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, Lewis’s big clearance up field was collected by Hall, and he linked up with Benbow before crossing from the left. Iacovelli out jumped his marker to loop his header over Jackson inside the left hand post.
Four minutes later the scores were level after Ryan Keen was adjudged to have fouled substitute Jamille Matt in the area. Marshall drove the resulting penalty down the middle of the goal for the equaliser. The Royals looked for another goal and on 71 minutes Ball flashed an effort across the area which was just too far in front of the supporting attackers.
Back came Rovers, Benbow's 75th minute free-kick was well saved by Jackson at the foot of his right hand post. Five minutes later Agar's free-kick delivered to the far post was glanced just wide by Godwin.
Rovers’ goalkeeper Lewis produced two superb point blank saves in the space of six minutes to deny Matt on both occasions. In the final seconds Rovers almost undone all their good work, Alex Roofe's poor pass was seized upon by Matt, he put the ball into the area and after a goalmouth scramble the ball fell to Marshall who managed to steer the ball wide with the goal at his mercy and Rovers survived to claim their well deserved point.
